Also known as monkey nuts or groundnuts. They are interesting due to the fact that, as is clear from their name, their fruit develops underground. Their country of origin is noted as East Asia or Brazil, however, peanuts were grown in the distant past by Caribbean natives. Peanuts attain their delicious flavour upon roasting. In their raw state they taste similar to beans. From the botanical point of view peanuts are a vegetable, and do not belong to the nut family. Their pollinated blossom permeates into the soil where it matures. Peanut butter is a peanut delicacy in a number of countries. For example, in the USA, almost 50 % of peanuts grown there are used for producing peanut butter.
