The new crop of mostly naturally opened pistachios has already been marketed in Iran. The prices in the last several weeks were more or less stabilized, nevertheless, in case of closed-shell pistachios the price went slightly up although the tendency to price drop was expected by many. These days there are some signs that the pistachio price drop might finally occur.
The current price of 28/30 pistachios is around USD 4,900/mt FOB Banda Abbas.
The latest numbers suggest that the 2006 harvest could be somewhere between 175 and 180 thousand mt.
High yield of poppy was expected this year and therefore everyone expected sharp price drop.
The lowest price of the new crop was around 1 EURO per kilo, then rose up again. The reason for the increase is most of all the changeable and rainy weather during harvest, which, unfortunately, means high moisture and high level of impurities contained in poppy.
The current price of poppy is around 1.1 EURO/kg.
The new crop of walnuts in Ukraine should be available at the end of September. No dramatic drop in prices compared to the previous year is expected. The yield estimations are positive, nevertheless, the low yields in China (up to 30% less) and high demand for walnuts will keep the prices high.
