Market report - 3 March 2006

Iranian pistachios

This year´s business has been accompanied by rather radical changes caused by much stricter EU regulations and mainly by their interpretation and attitude of respective inspection bodies in particular member countries.

The situation is extremely bad especially in Hamburg and a great number of Iranian suppliers have cut off their supplies until the complicated situation gets at least a bit clearer. Naturally, the fact has impacts on price. While the European prices are rising, they are gradually falling in Iran due to demand deficiency especially from China.

We will see whether the trend continues after the Islam holidays starting in late March. For the time being everything suggests so.

Walnuts

The market prices has been unchanged since the beginning of the year. We are not expecting any further swings, the season practically ends at Easter.

Blue poppy seeds

Unfortunatelly, the poppy seed prices go up every day. Nevertheless, this does not mean that high amounts of poppy seed are available, on the contrary, farmers are trying to keep their supplies as long as possible in expectation of higher profits and therefore release just very limited amounts of poppy seed to the market.

The main reason, though, lies in the long winter and impossibility to seed new crop. It is obvious that the new harvest will be about a month delayed.
